If you’re like me, and like most people, then you occasionally procrastinate. Instead of checking email you watch cat videos. You put off running to the post office with just one more episode on Netflix.
What if I told you that there’s a way to be productive while you’re procrastinating? Instead of getting sucked into scrolling Facebook, try to spend your time with an activity you actually like, even if it’s not part of your workday. If you get through fun, but productive, activities, it’ll jump-start your motivation to get to work. Try these activities that give your productivity a starting point.
If you’re not into podcasts yet, you’re seriously missing out. Even the comedic ones feel like they’re teaching you something. A good podcast can give you the feeling of hanging out with smart friends or attending an enthralling presentation. What better way to procrastinate than to feel like you’re educating yourself? If you need some recommendations, check out our post on the podcasts we love right now.
2. Read a book
Pick up your Kindle, go to Barnes and Noble, checkout your local, dusty bookshop, or visit your library—whatever works for you, find a book to read! And don’t worry about reading something impressive. If you’re in a reading rut because you think War and Peace is a drag, check out the young adult or sci-fi section. We’re not judging! Any reading is good reading.
3. Go for a walk
Get your blood flowing! Breathe the fresh air! Your productivity and creativity can get stuck when you’re sitting at your desk all day. Leaving your workspace means you can return with a refreshed mind. Plus you’ll be getting your steps in!
4. Cook a meal
Everyone’s gotta eat! Try a new recipe or stick to your comfort food. Either way you’re checking off a necessity—a yummy one at that.
5. Make a craft
DIY is big right now thanks to Pinterest. Learn how to knit, paint a storage cubby, or plant a succulent. You’ll be customizing your space with something you can be proud of. Not the crafty type? Those adult coloring books are actually amazingly relaxing and fun.
6. Tidy your workspace
Anyone else feel super satisfied having your files color-coded and a clean, clear desk space? I’m 100% guilty of this. I mean to the point where I procrastinate doing my actual work so I can make sure everything is neatly stacked.
7. Catch up on the news
Staying up to date on what’s happening around the world is helpful to any job or situation—even if it’s not technically part of your workday. Read a few articles about what you’re interested in, but don’t get sucked into a link wormhole. Try making a list of the links you’d like to read and when you need to take a break from work, navigate to it so you don’t get overwhelmed by the news out there. Follow us on Twitter to stay up to date on the articles we're loving!
