Congratulations! You’ve made it to the New Year! You’ve likely planned out your goals and are excited to get started. It’s a time for a fresh start and new beginnings.
But how do you actually follow through on your resolutions? We’ve all done it—February rolls around and we start slacking off. By March we say oh well, try again next year.
Well not this year! This year we’ll get to work and accomplish our goals! Follow these tips for success.
1. Make It a Habit
Find one way to make progress on your goal every day. Making your goal a habit is the best way to ensure consistency and success over the long term. Try to combine your new habit with an existing one, like if you want to be more organized set aside 5 minutes of your day to tidy your desk while you wait for your tea to brew. Find what works for you and make it stick!
2. Keep Track of Your Progress
When you’re working on a goal, it can sometimes feel like you aren’t seeing any changes. That’s why it’s important to track your progress. If you make a note of your progress every day, you can see how far you’ve come and you’ll be motivated when you see your work is paying off.
3. Reflect and Remind Yourself of Your Motivations
It’s important to remember why you want to achieve your goals in the first place. When you’re working so hard for so long, you can lose track of why you are working on your goals. Take a moment every now and again to reflect on your motivations so you can feel refreshed and ready to keep on working.
4. Work On One Thing At A Time
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, focus on one thing at a time. When you feel like your goal is insurmountable, it can be paralyzing. Instead of looking at the big picture, think of one manageable thing that you can do right away. For example, if your goal is to eat healthier, focus on finding and saving just one new recipe. Don’t get stuck thinking of how hard it is to achieve your goal, just work on one thing at a time to slowly chip away at it.
5. Ask for Help & Team Up
Lean on your support system. It’s always easier to accomplish a goal when you’re collaborating with another person. Not only can they hold you accountable, but they can also help you reach your goals. Your friends and family will be happy to help you with your resolutions. You might team up with someone else that has the same goals as you!
6. Recalculate and Revise
As you’re working your way through your resolutions this year, you may find that you need to revise your goals. Are you finding that your original resolutions were a bit too lofty? Rather than giving them up all together, take stock of how far you’ve come and recalculate a more realistic goal.
7. Talk About It
Be proud of your intentions and your progress! Talking about your goals and the work you’ve done will help motivate you and hopefully inspire others as well. Maybe you’ll even gain a goal buddy to join you in working on your resolutions.
8. Don’t Beat Yourself Up
If you slip a little or get behind on your progress, don’t get down on yourself. If you let negativity into your life, then it’ll be harder to stay motivated and continue working. Try to stay positive. Everybody makes mistakes, so if you mess up just dust yourself off and try again.
