Let me start off by introducing myself, my name is Robert Musterer, and for better or worse it was my idea to create UltiCareer.
We’ve all been asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” The problem is there are so many opportunities out there. How can any one person know what type of job they may wish to pursue? Heck, I joke that I still don’t know what I want to be, and I’m approaching retirement age! It may be too late for me. But, UltiCareer was created to help others answer this question.
UltiCareer, as the name implies, is intended to be the ultimate career research site. At its most basic, UltiCareer is a database for community postings by people describing what “a day in the life” of their type of job is really like. In other words, what is a typical day like? What do you like and dislike about your job? What do you really do when you’re doing that type of job? Too many alternative resources for getting information about jobs provide information on a narrow set of jobs and are typified by dry, high-level descriptions that don’t give a sense of what doing that job is really like.
The concept behind UltiCareer is to be a voice of the people. We want contributions for all types of jobs, from all walks of life. To describe what doing each type of job is really like, with its pluses and minuses. To capture the attributes about those jobs that will allow others to explore various career options.
We view the target audience for this site to be varied. It will include high school students exploring different career opportunities, thinking about whether or not they want to go to college. If they decide to college, to help them determine what they might like to major in. For those who don’t want to go to college, what type of job opportunities they might be able to pursue without a college degree. Or college students, considering modifying their major. Others may have studied a given major simply because it was an area they had an interest in, and they now need to face the reality of approaching graduation and want to explore what types of careers they may be able to pursue given that major. Or it can be for anybody considering a career change – whether by choice or circumstance.
Of course the heart and soul of being able to make UltiCareer successful is to have people contribute descriptions of their type of job in a meaningful way that other people can learn from. We like to think that anybody who enjoys their career, or dislikes it, would have an incentive to describe it. Also, anybody who wants to advocate for their career choice, or anybody who has children. Everyone supporting this community effort will provide a great way to explore various career options.
The core of UltiCareer will be the database and search routines against that database. We will eventually expand the functionality to include other resources, but we need to start slow and grow. So please allow me to encourage each and every one of you to take a few moments of your time and share your story on UltiCareer. Start helping others by describing what a day in the life of your type of job is really like.
You’ll appreciate contributing to the community, and everyone exploring career opportunities will appreciate your insights.
on UltiCareer to help others on their job search, get to know what your type of job is really like.
